I recently swapped my 231 for a 242 so I could have the full time 4wd option.
My old 231 was giving me some problems. It would always go in to 4wd but every once in a while it would just started grinding all of a sudden.
It was the same sound as if you tried to put a manual transmission gear without pressing the clutch.
The rear output shaft on my 231 can be pulled in and out about 1/4". When I pull it out and spin it there is only a faint clicking sound. When I push it in and spin it there is a very noticeable grinding sound.
It doesn't matter to me as I've already done the swap but I am curious as to what the problem could be. I'll probably end up opening up the 231 to further inspect it but I was just curious if any of you know what may have happened.
