Is this normal? Steering column slide

I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport. It’s an XJ. While replacing the steering box, I noticed that the steering column slides back and forth quite a bit. I hate to ask dumb questions but I’m a self taught college student looking for a little help! Is this normal? See attached photos for a good look at what’s going on, thanks!

Yes, it's supposed to be collapsible in an accident, instead of skewering the driver.

If you havent got it back together yet, would be a good time to inspect the framerail for cracks. And that the steering box brace is in good shape.
