Noob brake question
 

Hello everyone,

I'm new here and i recently purchased a 95' XJ. I got a good deal on it or so i thought.... it has a couple of problems, some of which i have fixed. I put new a oil filter in it, replaced the old muffler, fixed the oil blow by problem and replaced the oil soaked air filter. Today i was in the parking lot and went to take off my parking brake and pushed the pedal for the brake and woosh.... it goes to the floor. so i get out theres pool of fluid by my left rear wheel. Long story short, the metal part of the brake line has a crack caused by rust. I need a new one. Does any one have any idea what the heck i'm going to have to do. I would like to do it myself because I am tight on money with school. Any web sites or info would be helpful. Thanks

Just replace the line itself...You can buy new line and new ends and flair it.

Also what the heck is a Oil muffler?

There is a disconnect on the driver's side of the rear axle. Right where you see the rubber flex line going up from the axle to the frame. You disconnect the rubber line there and the metal line on the axle disconnects from each brake backing plate. Then you just remove it from the axle all as one piece. Find an XJ in your local junkyard that has the same axle and snag the brake line off of it. Should be able to get it for $10 or less. Unless your junkyard dude is a crook.

Hey Kitsap, where do you live?? Tahuya State Forest ORV area is in Kitsap County. I've been there a few times. Been to Bremerton a few times as I've been in the Navy for 23 years, also...LOL.

I've been known to that in my younger days when my local junkyard dude was a crook. 3-4 parts for the price of 1 was pretty fare....I thought....LOL.:thumbsup:

How much would it cost to buy the parts to fix it.

I used to live in kitsap county. I moved to Oshkosh Wisconsin last year. i just kept the username.

Check it out at your local Schucks/O'Reiley auto parts store or Autozone. They will have about cheapest price in any given town.

there was just a thread where someone else had this problem and got a piece of 3/16" brake line for like 4 bucks. you will need a bender also to make the bends.

just get a roll of 3/16 brake lines somes fittings and a flairing tool you dont realy need the bender just becareful not to kink the line you can replace your entire line all the way to master cylinder for under $40 thats what i did when mine blew out

so my dad went around today to the local junkyards, no luck. Then we when to try taking the fitting off, the fitting just stripped. Is there anyway I could keep the current fittings and just take the broken piece out and replace that.

Its looking like I might have to bite the bullet and have the local shop do it.
