No tension on the emergency brake

So I have a 1998 Cherokee sport 4.0, 5 spd, 4.5”RC, 33”s and I went to take a picture of my Jeep on the trail but when I tried to set the emergency brake it made a loud pop and now there’s no tension behind it. I’m replacing the rear drums now and I noticed I was able to pull the ebrake cables through the backing plates. I spread the fingers for the cables back out so they couldn’t pull through. I tightened the tensioner because it was a little loose but nothing bad but I can’t put my finger on what’s causing the no tension on the emergency brake. I replaced the handle about two years ago because I had the situation where the button flew off. Any suggestions?

Never mind that was easier than I thought. I took the insert out of the center console and the cable snapped.

That'd certainly do it.
