i have a 1990 jeep Cherokee Laredo 4x4 4.0 auto. the trans was slipping a little and i changed the fluid and a week later it wont go into to drive but it will go in reverse. when i put it in drive i can get it up to about 4k rpms and it seems like its trying to move but it cant. what could be the problem? is my trans out?

Sounds like it. Be looking on CL for one just in case. They can usually be had pretty cheap.

Make sure you have enough fluid in the trans. I'm sure your checking the fluid while the your jeep is running? when my trans line went it leak a lot and it would not go into drive or reverse, I added trans fluid till it started moving.

So it doesn't go into Drive or it goes into drive but doesn't go? One is a linkage problem and the other is internal.

If you know it has enough fluid in it and it still won't move... then yes. You need a new transmission.

I'd lean more towards not having enough fluid tho.

i have checked the fluid its good and it does leak a little, i was looking around and some people think it might be a torque converter. Like it goes into drive but it wont try to move at all till i get up to about 4k rpms then it trys to move but cant. and thanks for all the help.

What trans fluid did you use when you drained and replaced?

the transmission fluid i used was oriellys atf trans fluid. and i added some stop slip cause it was slipping.

I'm not familiar with O'Really's compatibility with the required Dec/Merc III... this may be your problem.

so should i drain it and put different fluid in it? what kind of fluid should i use?

They originally took Decron Mercon III which is no longer manufactured. I would check the bottle of the stuff you bought to see if it's compatible with transmissions that require Dec III before draining and replacing but if it's standard ATF I think maybe it won't work.
