no spark to distributor cap

97 jeep Cherokee....wont start....not getting any spark to distributor from coil....already replaced coil and cap and rotor....battery is charged has gas....fuel pump is turning on....it is turning over....

Whats the voltage going into the coil?

Electicity 101
If a known voltage (12VDC) is applied to a load (the coil) and the load does not function, then the load is bad.

Don't remember exact figure, but it was above the the specs in Hayes manual, that's why we replaced the coil.

SeriousOffroad Oct 28, 2008 07:26 PM

Put a spark plug in the coil wire and ground the spark plug. Crank the motor and check for spark.

Got a Check Engine Light on?

Iwant2understanD Oct 28, 2008 08:31 PM

no, no check engine light. It's too dark to work on for tonite now, I'm gonna take it for diagnostic test tomorrow

Based on your description and the fact that you've already replace the coil it's probably going to be the Crank Position Sensor.

Bets anyone?

I second that... especially if it is just sitting there cranking.

Test it

I vote for the CPS as the culprit!!!

Thanks everybody! I'm going to look into that today, only thing that stinks is I'm finding them to cost about $100+ so it may take till payday to replace and that doesn't come till Friday. Any suggestions on how to test? Maybe just a continuity test with volt meter? Or is there something else I can do to check it?

Don't replace it most common get you by easy fix is just unplug it blow it out and plug it back in. Should fire right up.
