i recently put 6x9's in my rear hatch. relatively easy, after some trial & error. remember that your putting in a larger speaker, so you'll have to make the mounting/opening larger. i started by tracing & cutting the hatch trim piece where the old speaker grills were. then had to hack out the 4 fiberglass mounting "brackets" on each side (where the old speakers mounted to the hatch) in the hatch itself to make room for the larger magnet, & some 1/2" spacers out of plywood to space out the speakers a little more. (speakers aren't flush w/ trim, they stick out about 1" because i mounted the speakers to the front of the hatch trim, not the hatch itself. it seemed like the best way without gutting the hatch) speakers are oriented vertical (|, not -), & sound great! (only exception is when cargo area is full, then speakers are muffled due to stuff in front of 'em.) just make sure your rear hatch supports (shocks) are in good condition, cuz it made the hatch a little heavier. your mods may vary depending on the speaker & the size of the magnet. while you have it open, it would be a great time to upgrade your speaker wires, as well. if you don't want to cut anything, you may want to find a rear headliner speaker console found in some newer xj's & zj's. i think they fit 6 1/2's. just a thought.
