No marker lights, tails, dash lights

A friend of mine is having a problem with his lights. The headlights work fine, turn signals, hazards, brake lights, reverse, all fine. It's when he turns everything on that it blows a fuse and the markers, tails, and dash lights go out. My first guess was a ground issue, then I thought it could be the actual switch acting up. My theory is it's bad on the first notch that controls all of that, but still good on the notch that just turns on the headlights. I did a google search on it but didn't really get good results. His jeep is a 91 Laredo, auto 4.0 4x4. Would replacing the switch be the best solution, or is there a common problem with the lights? He drives at night often and needs a quick fix, so any help will be very appreciated.

Which lights cause the fuse to blow? First click turns on the dash and marker lights. Does the fuse hold there? Second click is the headlights.
Headlights are on a circuit breaker built into the switch, everything else is fused. Likely a short in whatever lamp circuit is blowing the fuse. I'd guess the dash or markers..
See if the fuse holds with all the bulbs removed. If it still blows, start following the wiring.
If you have a trailer light kit in the back- look there first.

First place to check is the rear of the vehicle. Got some hokie trailer wiring by chance? I seriously doubt it's the switch. There's a direct short somewhere.

He ended up going to a shop anyway to figure it out, I guess he got some new wiring somewhere in the dash. He didn't really explain well. He's more of an acquaintance really, I was just trying to help him out a bit. Thanks tho guys, I appreciate it. Sorry for the late response, school is about to start up again and I've been busy between getting that stuff ready and trying to get in some more hours at work.
