Well, I look at it like this. The XJ has a "Tub" type interior just like a TJ, YJ or CJ has. I.E. you have to step up and out of it. So, as long as you can figure out a way to mount your side mirrors on your XJ (with the doors off) the local Badge Flashers shouldn't have a thing to say to you if they are not harrassing the TJ, YJ and CJ guys in your area for removing their doors. I plan on buying tube doors for my XJ in very near future. just because I think they are cool. Only for the summertime here in western Washington, though.

It completely depends on you local jursidiction.
Different places have different requirements.
Illinois used to be "if it was manufactured with a door, it had to have a door".. But they gave no specifications as the what the term door meant.

I must be lucky. I never get pulled over in my CJ3B for no mirrors. I never have doors either but thats legal on them I would imagine. I am going to take mine off this summer on my XJ. I guess I'll have to see if I get pulled over because I'm not going to invest in the time to put the mirrors on seeing how I will only have them off for a day or two at best. It rains sometimes up here.

I know here in Oklahoma if the vehicle was equipped with removable doors it is legal to drive without them, but if the vehicle came equipped with doors you are required to maintain those doors.

Hoods are removable but it's still illegal to remove them and drive around. When I say removable I mean designed to be removable. XJ's doors as with most vehicles doors aren't designed to be removable like a Wranglers doors.

Well, this summer I am going to test the legality of doors off of an XJ in Washington state. It's always easier to beg forgiveness than to asl permission. This way, if it is against the law, I will at least be able to drive around until I get pulled over, with the doors off.
