Turns out it wasn't the ground that was my issue. I went almost 2 months without blowing any fuses, then the issue returned while I had the XJ out camping last weekend. I popped off the trim panel and unplugged the rear wiper switch. I switched on my headlights with a fresh 5a fuse and it didn't blow! Just to be sure I had nailed down the problem I plugged the rear wiper switch back in and the fuse immediately blew. Thank you, DesertDog, for posting this! It saved me from going insane, for sure!

This type of problem is why I am in the middle of an electrical overhaul on my '90. When I started digging into the wiring I found way to much tied together in questionable bunches. All pink wires go to a press splice. All grounds go through a press splice and into another press splice. When you are repairing individual switches or clock and stuff, the press splice will need undone, which is gonna be a big issue as when you remove the individual wire it will unravel the entire press splice. I am working on a more efficient way of getting these ground and other press splices done in an easier to repair block or something like a block

When all your dash lights were off, were the automatic shifter lights off? Like P N D R etc? I have the same problem but these lights are also off, and it happened at the same time. Thanks!

So I lost my dash lights this morning on the way to work. Thought I might have smelled something burning when it happened. Checked #6 fuse and it was blown. Replaced it and still no dash lights. When I push the rear wiper switch, it doesn't "rock" anymore. So I'm guessing the switch went bad. The rear wiper hasn't worked since I've owned it. Can I just unplug the switch and get the dash lights to work again or do I need to replace the switch? I don't really care if the rear wiper works, would rather have dash lights. Thanks for the help.

Well I answered my own question. I went out in the 30* cold with a head lamp on. Pulled it all apart. I couldn't get the plug off. Ended up busting the switch part off in little pieces. It had melted a little bit to the plug. I changed the #6 fuse out and the dash lights came back on. I think I'll leave it until it warms up and then replace the switch. Maybe that will allow the rear wiper to work again. I put the "rocker" part back in to cover the hole in the dash.

My dash lights went out on my 1999 Cherokee Sport one night with no gauge lights, console lights, and AC control lights. I found number 6 fuse blown (Dimmer fuse), every time I replaced it, it would blow again. I tore the whole dash apart, changed headlight switch, changed flasher module, confirmed my gauge cluster didn't short out, looked behind stereo for a wire shorting out, chased my harness and found nothing. After a full day of plying with wires I decided to take it to a specialist, he couldn't find the problem too until he check the rear wiper switch. Come to find out the rocker switches are all connected and if one goes it takes out the light system in dash. He had never seen that before but put a new switch in a WHAALAA! So everyone who is having this problem check that switch. I could never find a straight answer online as to what was happening but saw plenty others having same problem.
If I understand your post, it was the rear wiper switch that you you replaced to solve the problem, correct? Was the rear wiper working prior to replacing the switch? thanks. Mike

Welcome to the forum, vipermike!

I hope you realize that the post you quoted is over 8 years old. Some have said the rear wiper was working with the dash lights out, as the light in the switch itself was causing the fuse to blow. Another said upon his dash lights out and fuse blowing he checked his rear wiper switch which had melted and it had not worked since he bought it. Another posted that you should take apart and clean your ground wire connections because that fixed his lighting issue.

There could be several things that cause problems in the electrical system. Just have to search the forums for many threads to that effect!

Good Luck!

I have searched for several years to fixes for this issue and have never heard of the rear wiper switch switchthe cause.Well it WAS THE CAUSE! It took a replacement 5a fuse in slot 6 and uplugging the switch; and what do you know, lights on the gauge cluster, a/c controls and on the shifter console.
New rocker switch on order to make all systems functional once again!!
