The kid I bought my 1993 cherokee sport 4.0/mt told me it did not come with a catalytic converter. Can this be true with all the emission control stuff under the hood?

My 94 cat self-destructed internally a few years ago so I removed it and drove without one for 4 months with no problems. Had to get emissions tested to renew tags so I installed one and left it.

cat's are purely based off of emissions and too keep the peace in all areas cuz if you run anything with out a cat its just loud and obnoxious (spelling) i bought my cherokee frm a guy up in denver CO.. denver has all sorts of emission standards depending on where you are at and if you have emissions standard to get your vehicles running. i live in the springs so far they dont need emissions so i am just gonna attempt to get rid of the charcol catch can w/ no clue what lines to pull and cut my exhaust right after the cat... maybe throw a flow master on it as well cuz this some what small town falcon we have no sound ordinance!!!!

in addition to the emissions/noise, it's also a common courtesy to yourself and everyone around you to not breath exhaust fumes all the time.

it's also a topic that is frowned on being discussed on this forum

Yah but original poster was just asking if it was possible it didn't come with one. And it did from the factory. Exhaust shops around here are not even allowed to touch the exhaust on a rig newer than 74 if it doesn't have a cat, and we don't even have emissions testing here.

IMHO the CAT does not have a great impact on performance.
If it does, then the cat was damaged or plugged.

OTOH oil mfgrs have reduced the Zinc ppm in modern engine oils to extend the life of the CAT. Running this oil on old flat tappet lifters motors can and will cause excessive wear on the cam lobes. But thats another story...

Every passenger vehicle whether it be a car/truck that has been built after 1974 and is titled and registered in the United States has had catalytic converters on them.
And to remove because your local/state municipality does not require emissions testing is truly a bonehead move.

Like it was said, if removal of the cat increases performance...then there was something wrong with the cat which caused diminished performance.

This thread is allowable. OP didn't say anything about removing it. Just questioned the info that he got from his DAPO.

removal of a factory installed emissions control device only harms the environment and our sport.

end thread
