I was planning on trying this as i see others have done it with the crank sensor. where exactly is the crank sensor on my 2000 4.0 cherokee 4wd classic. thanks.
one new development is i replaced the 6/9/12 fuses and 16 in the pdc but someone said to check to see if power at the fuse. all had power and the test light came on but fuse number 6 by the passenger kick panel seems to not have power as it did not light the test light and i think this fuse does effect the cluster.
how do i get power back to this fuse and is this most likely my problem. again everything else i have checked seems to work properly.

i believe i disconnected the crank sensor and tested and no change. i did have the car scanned and two codes came up.
P1694
no bus message received from companion module
P1698
no chrysler collision detection message from transmission control module
any more help with this would be great. every connection i have seen looks great and very clean.

It sounds like the TCM is where your problem is. Somebody said they disconnected it and the "no bus" went away.
I'd try that and see if the gauges come back. Then there may be a way to check the TCM and see if it's a bad TCM or an issue with the wiring.
It could be as simple as cleaning up the connection at the TCM and putting some di-electric grease on the connector.

another new update. i unplugged the tcm and still have the same problem of no gauges but everything else still is working. i did the same disconnecting the crank sensor and no help. i checked both connections and cleaned them and they look like new. still the car runs and drives perfectly.
i did notice something new that may be my problem or a new problem. fuse number 26 which is an air bag fuse blows every time you install a new fuse. i blew 3 fuses in a row, fuse 27 has no issue, air bag fuse too.
hopefully someone can help with this.

my sensor is not at that rear of the intake, i believe its underneath by transmission, see photos. i located the cps and followed the wires to the connection and unplugged it. still no gauges, still the same problem.
so i have removed my cluster and cleaned it very well and even got a second cluster and cleaned it well and installed both and no gauges.
replaced all related fuses
unplugged tcm and and then cps
checked for loose grounds
checked for loose or damaged wires and loose connections
had it scanned and 1698 & 1694 codes came up
wonder if i have two bad gauge clusters. or since the codes came up during scanning is it code related.
few pics of jeep

That is undoubtedly a beautiful looking XJ you have there.
Someone mentioned something about the airbag module and clockspring possibly causing the NO BUS condition. If you're constantly blowing your airbag fuse, maybe that's the next thing to check. If the XJ is like the TJ of the same year, the airbag module is EXTREMELY easy to remove. I don't know about the clock spring.. I can't remember if it had a locking piece to keep it from moving when I did it in my 00 TJ, but those suckers are pretty sensitive.
If you want I'll send you the airbag module and gauge cluster out of my TJ to test with..

how do i unplug the air bag module, what is the process.
i was thinking next step would be to try a cluster that is working and install it. even though the junk yard one i pulled is very clean it could still be defective. i will try the air bag next just need to know how to unplug it.

2 - From behind the steering wheel, look for two deep screw holes. I think these are torx but I'm unsure of the size. Unscrew these and the airbag module will be loose.
3 - Gently lift the airbag module out (basically the entire front center of the wheel) and disconnect the connector behind it.
You should be able to see the clock spring with the air bag removed. I'd research this before touching the clock spring to make sure you're not going to break something.

i unplugged the air bag on steering wheel and still no gauges.
i unplugged the yellow connector which i believe disconnects both air bags and no gauges
regardless if airbags are connected or not fuse number 26 blows every time i turn on the key to start car. i have gone through and blown 6 fuses on 26 fuse slot
also, did i properly disconnect cps, i am pretty sure i did just want to make sure. i followed the wires from the sensor and they went directly into that plug then around and up towards the oil dipstick.
