Newb question

This may be a stupid question but I noticed on the harmonic balancer there is some rubber that looks like it's Coming out of it, like some sort of seal or somthing. would that cause my jeep to make a clanking noise? Like maybe it's trowing it outta balance to make that noise

Thats the vibration dampner part of it, if it's coming apart, then you prbably need a new one.

Would that cause the noise I'm hearing?

mentalbreakdown00 Apr 25, 2011 07:37 PM

I havent heard one cause a clanking, but a roaring, and other problems like weak p/s alt not charging good etc.

Alright, what do you think the sound is, it's not consistent and it goes away at about 1000 rpm's

mentalbreakdown00 Apr 25, 2011 07:45 PM

Have you taken the belt off and started it to see if you still have the noise? If you do it's the balancer, if not the search is on.

More than likely if its a clanking noise its the exhaust pipe on the frame ect ect , I've seen that to many times on mine

91jeeper Apr 25, 2011 07:53 PM

I have not done that yet, I'll have to give it a shot and hope for the best

91jeeper Apr 25, 2011 08:16 PM

I don't think it's the exhaust

Your harmonic balancer is about to go to hell. Go ahead and replace it. O'reily's auto parts has a specific pulley puller for the jeep that keeps you from having to take out the radiator.
You will have to take off your fan though. No big deal.
I just had to do this.
I took off my belt and the "knocking" sound was still there. Sounds like a pushrod but its not.
If the balancer comes apart it will make a terrible sound as it tries to rip through your rad fan and throw your belt off at the same time. If you hear this sound turn the jeep off immediately. If you dont, the belt will wrap around your fan and lock the fan clutch up as your engine continues to rotate screwing up the fans clutch.
Taking off the balancer nut is a prob if you don't have an impact wrench, however I broke mine loose by putting a breaker bar on the nut, laying the bar's handle on the PS pump housing and bumping the engine very slightly, checking if it were loose each time. By "slightly" I mean the crank should not even make 1/8 of a turn. Turn the key to make the engine "pop" or "tap".
Re-installation of that bolt should be done by cranking it down until the motor turns and then hitting the breaker bar with a hammer to simulate an impact wrench.:hammer: Do NOT try to tighten it the way you took it off!
Your better off with an impact wrench. Rent one or borrow one.
If you are not used to working on cars and this is your primary means on trans then let someone else do this, however watch and learn as we all have.
