Default New xj. Title says total loss.

Got an xj. Title says it's a total loss, I looked it up on nicb, claims it was totaled after 2 fires, in 2012 and 13. Under the hood is black. Partially melted oil cap, and the throttle cable coming off the cruise control motor is melted a little. No other signs of a fire ever happening. Is there a way to tell if this is the original engine in this? Its a 97 xj 4x2. Sport

Holy ****! Check all your fuel lines and make sure nothing is leaking so it doesn't start a fire again! Also go through the wiring with a fine tooth comb!

Not sure if there's a way to tell if it's the original engine, maybe theres a serial # on the block somewhere?

We've done a lot of work to it. Head was cracked. Injectors were clogged. So we put a new head and all the gaskets obviously, replaced injectors, coil, plugs, wires, checked for leaks, there aren't any. Next up is fixing the misfire then the a/c and fixing the check engine light that's out.

On the left (drivers) side of the block above the oil pan, there is a block casting number. Moving rearward, then comes an engine number, for instance 701MX17. This shows an engine that was built in 1997, in January, MX means 4.0L multiport injection, and completed on the 17th day of the month. Hope this helps.
