Default New XJ owner, 4 High problems

I searched a bit but couldn't really find a definite answer...

Anyways, so I bought my jeep a couple months ago, I am completely a noob when it comes to 4wd vehicles, I am used to building rx7's so coming from rotary engines in small rwd sports cars to this big jeep (comparatively) with 4wd and this thing I think its called an automatic transmission?? haha So lay it easy on me for now.

So heres the thing, weather is getting pretty bad about now and I needed some 4wd to get me home early early in the morning, hours before they ever get around to plowing.

Whenever I put the t-case in 4 high sometimes I can go maybe a block or two, but most of the time as soon as i give it gas, I hear this, not grinding, but loud rapid clicking from the front passenger side (front axle?) and it will kick out of four wheel drive putting me in neutral it seems. But if give it any gas after its "popped" out of 4H the clicking resumes till it is at idle. So I have to put the tranny in neutral, then t-case in 2wd to get going again.

What confuses me though is it will absolutely never happen in 4 low, no matter what. So usually I drive around in 2wd till i get somewhere where I can't get moving again and put it in 4 low.

I would be really convenient to just keep it in 4wd needless to say.

If anyone could shed some light i would be really appreciated. I am thinking new t-case or t-case rebuild but the fact 4low works flawless I don't want to make a move till I understand it better.

Thanks!

Matt

No sir, I fairly certain it's part time, and was told not to use part time 4wd on dry pavement.

putting the tranny in neutral to shift the TC is normal, not sure of the popping,it works fine in 4lo but gives you problems in 4hi,Im thinking the syncro is going bad in your TC for 4hi,or the linkage is out of adjustment so when you drive it pops out of 4hi

What I meant was I have to put the tranny back in neutral after it pops out, I can't do anything with the transfer case or move the jeep at all untill I put the transmission in neutral then shift the t-case back to 2wd or 4wd whatever i need.

Just checked the t-case has a plate stamped 231j

And yes you are correct, works great in 4low.

sounds like something is out of adjustment,or worn out.
