Bogging down and backfiring while driving
I have a 96 Cherokee sport, but it has a 98 engine. We get about a mile from home and it starts losing power and backfiring. Have to pull over and turn it off to sit for a few minutes. Been told several different ideas from non jeep owners. Has anyone else had this problem?

Test the fuel pressure.

A mile from home is also around the time that the vehicle will be switching from open-loop to closed-loop because the temperature has come up enough. This is the point where the computer goes from using "canned" values for fuel trims and starts relying on the signal picked up from the upstream O2 sensor(s) to adjust the mixture based on what the O2 sensors are seeing in the exhaust stream.
A cheap OBD2 scanner ($25) can help you see the fuel trims and O2 voltage levels in real-time (It will also show when the vehicle has switched from open-loop to closed-loop which is nice for correlating the problem).

Any check engine light? If so, retrieve codes. Is this a recent engine swap or has it been in for a while and running well?
Two good pieces of advice so far. Fuel pressure and testing oxygen sensors. For a 98 engine, you should have 49 psi, plus or minus 5 psi.
Good luck and keep us updated!
