New Oil Pump issue

New Oil Pump issue
2000 Jeep Cherokee
4.0L, all stock
Bought a new Melling pump (M81A, NOT high volume) and tube, assembled both (a PITA) and installed where the old one was, in exactly the same position as the old pump.
I go to prime it and it doesn't spin at all, even though I know it did moments before putting it in (that's how I aligned it). At the end of my rope, I decided to crank the engine manually on the harmonic balancer, and I hear this metal clunk after turning it a bit. I check the cam synchronizer (where the pump drive is) and still, the pump did not turn. So I turn the key to crank it using power, and still nothing (fuel and spark disconnected). Now I think my timing might be off.
Any ideas? Mostly just concerned with getting the pump to work. Is it possible it just didnt seat correctly in the hole the drive sits in?
