Default new to me XJ mechanical issues

well, i picked up a 1990 cherokee 4 door a few months ago. test drove it, it ran good. i knew it needed some attention, so i have been messing with little stuff mainly in the engine bay. I'm not really knowledgable on the older gasoline set ups. got so used to my diesel truck with everything, and work on the wife 99 tahoe. well i have been doing research, and finding out that there are some small 'hoses', which i have found out to be vacuum hoses, are missing, or chewed off by mice i guess, or just not connected at both ends. there are a few plugs that are connected to absolutely nothing, and i cannot find out where they go. call me pitiful, but this stuff is irritating. i picked up a haynes repair manual to help some, but its kinda tough.
when i start it up, i have to keep giving it throttle here and there to keep it going. trying to figure that one out. anywhere else that has an easier to understand diagram?
also the fuel gauge is maxed way past full. I'm guessing it is not accurate.
the speedometer and odometer do not work as well. i will keep searching for answers to these issues. thanks in advance

Look at cruisers technical pictures, I recall seeing a vacuum diagram for renix xj. For the speedo, it is mechanical so the speedo gear in the transmission may be broken, the cable is bad or just disconnected behind the dash console or where it connects to the speedo gear. That would be my guess.

Welcome to the forum!

What may be the most helpful to you is a Factory Service Manual for the model and year of your XJ. You can buy one in pdf. format from Pacific Coast Manuals and download it for $7.95. They will give all the information on the XK not like the Hayes, I have both and the FSM is the only way to go for info.

Once you download it you can if desired print any part of all of it if needed to take with you to the shop/driveway.

A vacuum hose diagram for your XJ will likely be found on the firewall in the engine bay next to the master cylinder.

well, today, went to pick n pull. found a '89 with most of the components for the engine bay connected. so i was able to snag a few hoses and see how most of it goes. the only thing i noticed when i got home, is that there is only 2 hoses coming from the vacuum canister behind my bumper, but on that 89, there was 3. i may not have gotten all hooked up correctly, but now it is not as hard to get the truck started, and it runs smooth on its own. still have an exhaust leak to fix. Fred, thank you for the advice. i will definitely look into that.
Crazy 8s, i will have to look for that.
GRohr, i will look into that as well.

another problem i have come across, is the right blinker is acting funny. rear right will not blink, for turn signal, but will flash for emergency flashers. also, the right turn arrow in the gauge cluster, stays lit up when i turn the head lights on. i figure there is a short somewhere, its just a matter of finding out where.

Difference in number of vacuum lines on canister may have to do with one Jeep having cruise control and the other not?
