New jeep owner and need help
I bought a 1986 Jeep wagoneer 4cyl 5 speed. not bad for $400 but after I got it home I started looking a little deeper I found little easy fixes then noticed the engine idles around 2000 rpm's I tried adjusting the throttle a little and it helps a little. I was told when I bought it that the Command-Trac 4x4 didn't work and he thoght it was the vacuum lines. As I got it home and started inspecting it closer I found that the manual shift lever housing connecting it to the tranny is missing some bolts and the under carriage is covered in an oily grime. The engine runs good and strong and doesn't make any obviously bad noises. I think I can salvage it but I'm not sure where I should start. Any help would be appreciated.

Wow, to be honast, unless you have some wicked attachment to it, I would probably try to flip it to some one else and buy an XJ with the 4.0. Those 4cyclinders were dogs!! On the flip side the did come with D44's and 4.10 gears! If you have one of them with the D44 and 4.10's then I would find an older 4.0 and do a motor swap. As far as helping your ldling issue, those older motors were problematic when it came to the vacuum leaks. I would look for any obvious broken, tore or missing vacuum lines and go from there. Good Luck!!

Uh huh...vacuum line nightmare. Those engines are dependent on correct and non-leaking vacuum lines. Get a manual and trace out every vacuum line 4x4 included and then fine tune from there. Been there done that, you'll get to know that engine real quick!

Well good news, I tighened the gear shift down but now it is alot harder to get it in the right gear. I found the vacuum line for the 4x4 was connected wrong by the old owner so that is fixed. I am still having a hard time to get it to idle right. I may have to track down all the vacuum lines or take it to a mechanic to look at. Thanks fo the help.

Well I'm back. I thought I fixed the 4x4 because the light was on saying it was working. I went out to test it today and got stuck. I noticed that only my rear right tire was spinning. I thought it at least had Posi-traction. I put it in 4H and nothing I tried 4L and nothing. Is there a reason the 4x4 light says it is on but it isn't engaging. Ay help would be great. Also one more thing it is a 5 speed and I notice that 2nd and 3rd gear really make a rough sound but as soon as I hit 4th it sounds quiet and normal. Thanks for any help.
