New Guy- A few problems
Hi all. Been reading through your forum, and decided to join. I just picked up an '85 Chief. It has a 2.8 V-6 and a manual 5 spd. I got the thing for next to nothing, and cosmetically it is in great shape. The problem I'm having is this. There is a shrieking noise that seems to be comming from the tranny when I drive at highway speeds. It happens in all gears, but is most noticable in 4th and 5th, and it only occurs while the accelerator is depressed. In other words, if I let off the gas when the noise occurs, it stops. As soon as I accelerate again, or even just maintain my speed, it is there. Am I making sense? Any ideas where to start looking? Thanks in advance.

welcome aboard
noises like you have are hard to diagnose
but I would start with inspecting every thing you can get to easy first
start with simple check if the u joints need grease
check the diffs and transfer cas and trany for proper lubrication
give the rest of the member a little time to respond some times it takes24 hrs to get a response

Thanks for the advice so far.
I crawled under the jeep this afternoon, and did find that the slave cylinder was very loose on its studs,,,,, so loose, I could move it very easily by hand. I tightened it up, flushed out the lines, and bled it with fresh fluid. Still not satisfied with the pedal feel, so I ordered a new slave. BTW, the noise diminished a bit after I tightened the slave. Could a failing slave cylinder generate any of the noise?

it could be a bad main bearing in the trany

i had a similar problem adn after driving it around for a while the seal on my harmonic balancer broke and the whole thing just fell to the ground. you may want to check if its the belt screaming on a pully, unless ur sure its coming from the tranny which this would not be useful to you at all LOL
