New to forum and drive shaft question

1 Attachment(s)
Hi everyone! Im new to the form but I have had my XJ for over 3 years now and just never got around to joining. I have a 2001 Cherokee limited and after a weekend of wheeling I noticed I have some play in my front drive shaft. Im not to sure exactly what to call the part but the play is right where the drive shaft meets what looks like a yolk sleeve? I do get a good amount of vibration between 68 and 75 mph. I have about 2.5 inches of lift and the NP242 T case with full and part time. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

How much rotational slop, and when was the last time you greased it? It should have a grease nipple and you can pump a bit of grease in there.

There is verry little to none rotational play. All the play is up and down. And it was greased about a month ago along with the rest of the front end.

Chances are its FUBAR. You may have heated that shaft up and warped it just slightly. I say this cause Ive gotten two JY front driveshafts, rebuilt them fully and have the same issue.

Remove the shaft and drive in 2wd to confirm the vibration goes away

Your probaly right that its nothing just wanted to make sure it wasnt going to explode on the highway. but i have to do the front pinion seal so i will tie the shaft up and see if the vibration goes away.

If it has vertical play then the splines are worn. Get another from the JY or buy a new one

Actually it can possibly destroy your pinion on the highway. I have to drive no more than 60mph on my last trip because i have the same issue. This weekend its coming off and im going to just pay 235 and get an adams one or tom woods. No reason taking another chance on a JY one.

And as for the tying up idea, don't risk it. I was gonna do that but when i looked under the jeep, its tight by the front suspension. Not worth risking it dropping when you're driving. Just take it out and stay in 2wd

I will give the JY a try but could someone give me a part number for a new oem one or after market i couldnt find anything online about it

OEM ones are $600+.

JY you can use any year XJ with 4.0 and aw4 tranny front

And aftermarket is people like tom woods, adams driveline, forgot the next few lol.

And yea, that chart is golden
