Does it try to start if you spray some starting fluid in the intake? If so you have a fuel delivery problem. (If not, the problem is most likely spark.) It's a quick easy way to get an idea of where to look further.

P0505 is the IAC. Won't cause a no-start. It would help to know what you have.
Year? Engine?

"keeps trying to crank". Is it cranking? At the correct speed?

Its a 98 Cherokee sport has the 4.0 inline 6 and it seems to be cranking at the right speed

Thanks. Next try to determine if it has fuel and spark.
Do you hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds when you turn the key to "start"?
If so, pull a spark plug. Is it wet with gas?
Lay the plug on the valve cover with the wire connected and crank the motor. See if you have good spark.
Rambler's suggestion of starting fluid is also a good one. If it starts momentarily you have spark but no fuel.
