Need help troubleshooting Jeep won't start

1999 Jeep Cherokee Sport; battery, spark plugs, and spark plug wires replaced six months ago. Has been running fine.

Suddenly, with no previous indication of any problems, it will not start. The battery is good. When I turn the key part way to on the headlights, radio, etc all work fine. When I try to start the engine it won't turn over. As I start to turn the key from the position when radio, etc will work without the engine running, but before the engine starts trying to turn over, I can hear a "click" sound coming from the engine. How do I troubleshoot? Does the "click" give any indication of what the problem is? The "check engine" light is not on.

Im guessing youve already tried jumping it If you can hear the click but the starter isn't cranking I'd guess starter solenoid. (or engine seized up) If there was nothing at all I'd guess neutral safety switch offhand. There is a bypass you can do that is on this forum if you search it. Of course it will start in gear with the bypass, just FYI It's kind of hard to dx over the Internet :)
