Default NEED HELP! Replacing TPS on 96 cherokee

I have never replaced a TPS before and I think I know where it is located but the power connector is much smaller than the TPS I got from autozone. I don't know if I am looking at the right spot or not.

This is the TPS i got:
http://www.autozone.com/autozone/par...er=195877_0_0_

I am not sure where it goes, I am looking on the other side of the throttle (on the right of the air intake) and there is something that looks like it, but the power adapter is much smaller and won't fit on the one that i purchased. I made sure it was the correct TPS.

This what my TPS looks like. But the electrical connector is too small to fit on the new one.

ok...so compare your old TPS with the new TPS...are they the same (plug wise)? Maybe they gave you the wrong part at Autozone.

the new one requires a larger plug for some reason. I checked online and it is supposed to be the right part. I will go in tomorrow.

Which engine do you have - the 4.0L (6 cyl) or the 2.5L (4 cyl)?

That link offers the same P/N for both engines (TPS318) - I checked. Do you have the box it came in? If yes then can you read the P/N on the component and match it to the P/N on the box label? Hey, s#it happens!

The box says TPS318 and the part number is not on the part. I checked with advanced auto, napa, and others. Everyone has a TPS that looks just like mine...but it won't work since the connector is too large.

This may sound stupid but .... is the TPS for a 1995 the same as the one for the 1996?

Is it possible there was an engine swap and the motor in your jeep is not the same year as your jeep?

I would look at the TPS for the 1995 and see if it looks like your old one.

Take a look at the TPS shown here ... it is for a 1995.

Take a pic of the connector on the old one and new one so we can see the difference.

a little word of advice about autozone tps's....TAKE IT BACK!! i bought one from them cause i thought my stock one was bad, well the new one made it run like crap, and it stopped working all together after about a week, i put the old one back on cause it was fine and now it runs great again, if you really need a new one, either get it from napa or a dealer, they are the only two good ones with the electronic sensors

That is what I was alluding to. 96 was toe crossover year and the first to go with OBDII

Here is a link to the 1997 TPS and it looks like the OP's connect fits .....

That sensor looks more like it will mate with his connector. The previous link you provided was for a part that was almost identical to the one he got from AutoZone. Somebody else said to get the OEM or NAPA TPS and I whole-heartedly agree with them.

hey guys thanks a lot for all your help. My 96 definitely needs the 97 TPS. I would never have thought about that. I am going to the dealer tomorrow to get the TPS from there and returning the autozone one since they seem to only last a few months.

Thanks again for all your help!
