Default Need help in i.d. differential

New to jeeps and not sure of what i have.
It's a 1989 jeep xj with a 4.0 engine, automatic trans ans I think it has Command Trac part time 4x4.
The rear diff is a Dana and the numbers on the tag under the cover bolt is as follows:

53005193
3 55 605387-1
On the rear cover it says
Dana 42968
305 8
REV N
11-01-87

It does Not have the rubber fill plug but Does have the square head metal plug that you use a ratchet on, the cover is oval in shape.

Is this a Dana 30 or a 35?
And what type of lube does it take.

I've google serched pictures of both the 30 and the 35 and alot of the pics show a 35 but they say it's a 30 and pics of a 30 is called a 35 so i'm confused as to which is which.
Thanks for any help with this. Sorry not able to post a picture at this time.
Great fourm by the way, you guys really know your jeeps.

One other question, since i got thie jeep i have been dreaming alot about mud holes, tall hills and big rocks - is this normal????

Dana 30s were only front axles. There isn't a dana 30 rear.

Its either a Dana 35 or a Dana 44.

Google images will probably help you.

Judging by your clues I'd say it's a Dana 35. Oval cover. Numbers.

Front Dana 30
Rear Dana 35
Gear Ratio 3.55s

Very normal for your jeep to consume your thoughts and dreams.

30 in the front
35 in the rear, now that explains alot Thank You!!!

Like I said i'm new to jeeps and have alot to learn.
You guys rock!!

I'm also new to this fourm but have already learned alot reading the post here.
My uncle bought the jeep new, then when he passed away i bought the jeep and gave it to my father. Dad passed away this past March and so now i have it.
It's pretty much rust free and in good shape.
It's not a one owner, but it is a one family jeep.
Lot of good memories connected to this wagon.
Again, thanks guys.
