Mystery steel fell out of rear tranny shaft?

Mystery steel fell out of rear tranny shaft?
Please pardon my lack of terminology, but my manual is with my jeep at home.
I am in the process of rebuilding my AW4. When I removed the adapter housing from the rear of the unit, and then removed the bar shaped unit (cannot remember the name but it has rounded ends and is about 2.5 inches long, perpendicular to the shaft and it slides off) from the rear of the shaft, a little 3/4"x1/4" crescent shaped piece of metal fell out of the side of the shaft!
Does anyone know what that piece is for and why it just fell out?
Other than that, the proposed rebuild is going well.
