mystery noise
I've got this terrible noise. I've pulled the valve cover, everything's tight under there. I pulled the oil pan and everything looks good there. No metal shavings no scratches or dents in the pan. It's an i6 4.0 and I'm completely lost at this point. There should be a video with the noise attached if I did it correctly. It sounds like somethings hitting the oil pan but it's not consistent like somethings bouncing around in it Any suggestions?

just upload it to youtube and paste the link in a post, it will automatically link the video in here.

Check where the exhaust goes over the trans cross member. It is common for the exhaust to hit the cross member and make a terrible racket.

I've got the whole thing apart. I'm really not fond of the idea of putting it all back together to get it on my trailer and to a shop, for them to strip it all back down again. But hey, at least now I can replace all my gaskets and stop the oil leak I had.

Automatic trans?
Loose flexplate bolts? |
Yeah sorry, auto trans and 4x4. I'm gonna check, it definitely sounds like something hitting sheet metal

No luck so far. It's not the torque converter bolts or a loose flex plate although now I'm thinking maybe it's a knocking around the flywheel. If anyone with some knowledge could listen to the video I would really appreciate it. It's an INCONSISTENT knocking.

hope it's not torque converter itself
sounds sloppy... going to hurt if it is. Best of luck... new flex plate oem - 112$ edit- feel the bell housing and see it you can isolate it, you should be able to hear it and feel it at same time? |
Well I haven't tried running it again because I have the suspension dropped and the pan and exhaust off. I'm gonna have to put it all back together and start her up again and try to pinpoint it better.

I'm wondering if a cracked flywheel could be wobbling against the shield?
