can anybody tell me what in the world these plugs are for?

Generally, those plugs are for things you don't have.

They made one harness for each year XJ and only USED the plugs for the equipment it had. Simple.

well aint that just lovely. smart idea. less combinations, but dangit, now i want what they go to, i think.

Through a calculated process of testing, deductive reasoning and experimentation, using a multi-meter, 12v bulb and a speaker, I have discovered an empty harness for footwell lights and dash speakers.

I did not mess with the complicated plugs that have more than 3-blade connections.
Example; On a 2-blade connection fed by two wires, multi-meter shows 12v only when door plunger is operated and/or headlight switch is turned to dome light ON.
Forget how i figured out the speaker harness, but I do not recommend sticking speaker wires in various plugs with ignition ON. lol That was not how I did it.
But now I have a 6-speaker system on factory harness and lights in each footwell that come on when door is open, along with dome lights.
