Default mysterious explosion?

Backing out of the driveway today as I reached the end and the rear wheels crossed into the street I heard a heart-stoppingly loud sound (a combination of what sounded like an explosion and scraping for less than a second.) I immediately parked it and shut her off and got out and checked everything out. Nothing seems to be wrong, and I had not run over anything. She started back up just fine and drove the rest of the day with no issues.

WTF.

I know xjs are a noisy bunch, but this was crazy.
thoughts?

Could you feel said explosion? Or was it all noise? Had you used 4 recently?

^That's insane.

Today I found the right front fender flare's front two zipties were popped off, so my current leading theory is that after installing larger tires while turning in reverse the tire caught the flare and sucked it under, breaking the two zipties.

at least its not a transmission noise like I thought it was (shes been acting up lately.)

Most likely was a flare, esp if you just put on larger tires.

Turn and flex, see if your tires come close. You'll know.

Yeah I can make them rub if I hold it at a certain angle while the front tires are on the driveway and rear on the road (it's pretty bad heehee.) However, i've been having some pretty noticeable transmission problems now( jinxed it), but I think it's just because I need more fluid

Was it running okay when you heard the explosion? As soon as I read your post I had a flashback of a whipping I got as a kid. I put a potato into my dad’s tailpipe. He also made it to the end of the driveway. It sounded like a canon going off. Yeah, I wasn’t laughing long.

Try some Lucas Trans fix before you go spending major cash on replacing or rebuilding. That stuff is amazing!

Yeah it was running fine, I had just pulled into the driveway to get a friend and left it running then backed out when it happened. If he could slip a potato in there that fast he's a ing ninja

And I've heard great things about Lucas anything, I'll give it a shot. But then again, maybe I'm just looking for an excuse for that 4wd transmission

Oops I didn't catch the part about it sitting there running. As far as the Lucas goes: I have seen a trans that was slipping so bad the car wouldn't move. It was a Chevelle I bought. I put another couple of thousand miles on it and then sold it to by my wife a new car. I just emailed the new owner a few weeks ago to see if he had any pictures of the restoration. He said he is driving it like it is right now. He also added some Lucas trans fix.
