Mysterious engine failure
I have a 1997 Cherokee that runs well but from time to time just dies on me. I've tried a new battery, took it to a mechanic who of course couldn't reproduce the problem. I live in a city, so I can't drive it now and get stuck

Step 1 have codes checked. Sound tike Crank Position Sensor issue but could be fuel pump also. Checking codes might shed some light on issue and its free at most auto parts.

I had someone i knew that his jeep did this. he changed literally every part that would cause it to happen and still did it. Sadly he got rid of it after dumping 3k into it. had 250k miles.

If it was like my friends jeep its like shutting the jeep off from the key. Does it have a hard time randomly when starting back up or does it start right back up?

Yep. Codes. Get codes.
Could be a lot of things. Few of them are expensive, if diagnosed capably.
If you just start throwing parts at it, well, that gets expensive.
