Default My XJ would only start in neutral! Help!

Long time lurker, first time poster. Ok here's the deal. I go out to my jeep this morning after work and it starts up fine. (it has been taking longer to start up the last couple days, but I attributed that to the 18 degree temps). So I drive 1/4 mile down the road to my credit union park and turn it off. Not even five minutes later I go out to start my jeep and nothing. I have power, I can hear the fuel pump turn on but it wont turn over. I try it in neutral and it starts right up. Turn it off put it in park and it wont turn over. But it starts in neutral again. I drove home, tried srarting it in park, and it started(slow but it did start). So any ideas? Battery? Thanks for your help!

Sounds like a bad neutral safety switch. Plus you should probably get your battery tested and check and clean all your connections.

Yupp same thing happened to me yesterday. I called autozone and they said its 183.00 I'm like yea f that I'm going to the junk yard and getting one. Napa said 14 dollars and I'm like autozone said 183 he's like that don't sound rite. So I'm gonna see what napas looks like. I think they have the wrong part. Just wait and order it off ebay. They have them for 40 dollars shipped new.

Most people successfully clean the NSS (Neutral Safety Switch).

Napa has the wrong part... I searched their website and they are showing some screw-in 3 prong sensor.. and say it is for a 3 speed auto transmission.

Autozone is showing the correct looking switch for $183.99.. This is why most people rebuild them rather than buy new..

Or just leave it and not have to worry about friends stealing your jeep for beer runs cause they dont know how to start it.

seriously, never buy a new NSS unless it is physically broken in half.

Do this:

mine does this sometimes too i found that another thing that works is if you just wiggle your shifter a little bit it will start right up in park but if that doesnt work i throw it in neutral and get on with it lol.

Not to jack your thread or anything but mine doesn't start sometimes either but mine will not start in neutral. if i let it sit or wiggle some **** it will start in park. I'm almost certain that its the NSS. Anybody have any incite why it doesn't start in neutral.
