Is my tranny done for?
Long story short, I ended up towing my Cherokee 4 hours with a tow bar. Get home and realize I DIDN'T put the transfer case in neutral, and the tranny in park. It was just towed in drive the whole time. But I've heard that Chrysler has granny's that are able to handle that. Any opinions?? Thanks!

Well for us to help you, we need to know what year model and engine/trans/tcase combo you have on it

Oh okay my bad. 1996 Cherokee sport 4.0 inline 6, the trans and tcase are stock. I'll find out what they are in a minute

Drive it see if it shifts through all the gears normally.

You'll be pretty lucky if it isn't damaged. The internals were turning without any lubrication since the pump is driven off the input shaft. No transmission I know of can deal with that, Chrysler or otherwise.

The trans was in PARK? And the T-case NOT in neutral? That ain't good.
Well, let's think this through. Aside from the lubrication issue Radi already mentioned, you had it in PARK, which means it was not supposed to move. But, you moved it anyway. Why was it not supposed to move? In PARK, there's a small tab that engages one of the gears in order to prevent movement. This fools some uneducated people into thinking they don't need to use their parking brake. For you to have moved it means you had to break something. Either the tab (most likely) or the gear that it engages. That happened pretty quickly when you first started it up. So, yes, it's damaged. Rebuild time. Just tell buyers the story. :( |
