My tick got louder.
So we all know most of these 4.0's have a tick to them. Well mine has went from a tick to a mild knock in the past few days. I am 97% sure its coming from the top end i am thinking might be the lifters because it speeds up as i rev and then goes away until it idels down. Any help on checking/changing lifters on these 4.0's would be great. This would happen the week before i have a trip planned to MSORP, but it can be a main and my ***** will still hit the trails. If it blows good excuse for a 4.9 stroker

If I'm not mistaken, the lifters are down low inside the block but there's a whole lot of shaken goin' on up top under the valve cover (valve train).

Mine has had a tap coming from the top end since I bought it. Not gotten worse or better, but you said yours has become a knock. I would look into it, at least try to button it down to a lifter or rod, or someting else entirely. Id rather know than to have it crater suddenly.

Would that make a tapping noise?

I'm going to say it again....
Use a long extension, or even a long pry bar.
Put it to your ear, and touch the valve cover, then the block, and even the altenator and power steering pump till you can HEAR it through the bar.
Till you do that any advice you get is just conjecture.

Na she's got it, you should have heard my old 89 yota.....JEEZ that thing growled at you when it cranked up, and i gave that thing hell too. Did pretty good to hold together with my shinanigans at 217 xxx. And the 4.0 is a beast so if that little 1.8 can hold it's own then yours will be fine
