Is my radiator fan set up normal? (E-fan and mech fan?)

Hi all,

I've searched all over, but still can't make sense of my fan set up on my '96 XJ I bought off craigslist. The real problem I'm trying to address is overheating at slow speeds and while off road which I've read a lot about already and don't mean to duplicate a thread that's already out there. There seems to be a 2 fan set up for the cooling system: an e-fan with shroud on the driver side of the radiator and a mechanical fan on the passenger side. The mechanical fan has no shroud and I didn't know if this was normal. It seems to be always on also. I just wanted to know if this set up is normal and if a shroud should be on the mechanical fan at which point I'll get one and install to hope it helps with the overheating issue.

Thanks all, and please let me know if this is in the wrong place or there is somewhere else to find this info.

WELCOME to CF.

Yep there NEEDS to be a fan shroud on the clutch fan. Also sounds like the clutch on it needs replaced. If you order from here and tell them your a member here they'll give you a discount. Get your replacement clutch at NAPA.

Either one will work:
