My 4x4 isn't working. Every time I throw it into 4 hi it stays as if it's in neutral. Then it kicks me out. When I go to 4 lo it's grinds and cranks then kicks me out. My buddies say it's my transfer case but I'm still pretty sure it's my hubs that are kicking me out cause the 4x4 is usually married to the 2 wheel so it wouldn't drive for crap if it was the transfer case?! So is it the hubs or maybe just low on 4x4 fluid? I'm lost at this point.

More than likely it needs the linkage adjusted. Thats usually the cause of what your explaining. Low fluid won't do it, and locking the hubs won't cause that either. It's not hard to adjust, just a pain in the back as you have to get underneath it. I'm sure there are directions somewhere on the site for adjusting the shifter though, just do a search. I do each of my three XJ's every year all at the same time (that way I don't forget one..lol)
