Is my 1986 Jeep Cherokee a California vehicle?
I am in Minnesota and the 1986 Jeep Cherokee I picked up a few months ago here has me wondering if it is originally a California Jeep. The firewall sticker states that it is for " Principal use at High Altitude". And the spec for the Ignition Timing says 19 degress BTDC for a 2.8L V6 which is usually 12 degress BTDC. Can anyone help with some information about California vehicles?

kenestra what part of that firewall tag makes you think Cali car instead of high altitude car. It may have been built for a place like Denver or Colorado Springs. Not very much of Cali is above 4000 feet is it?

Ignorant of that tag myself so join the club on that. None were built out west. They all came from the same factory but they had different tunings for different parts of the country/world. That way when they arrived by train and truck they ran well on the first start.
The tag indicates a vehicle that was sent to a high altitude area with a overall ceiling of 4000 feet. That's what I got from that tag. No your post did not get to me but it surprised me as I have never seen that firewall tag before.

Thanks for clearing that up BlueXJ. Appreciate the great information. I was just a little confused as to where I should set my timing and plug gap at then since I am in Minnesota.

I would use 12 degrees BTDC if it were me. See how it runs at that setting. Follow the tag about the vacuum lines and set at the 12 degree mark and button it up and go for a spin. If you are not pleased then go to the 19 degree setting and see if that runs better or worse. My guess is going to be worse but you may have some Odd Jeep creation.
