Yeah more people are running thrush welded as to the turbo which would sound better
|
The thrush turbo has a very similar design to a Flowmaster 40 series and will give you a similar sound to that. The standard turbo muffler is a bit cheaper and when I had one I liked the sound alot, certainly a nice rumble for a $20 muffler!

So i just bought a thrush turbo muffler along with new clamps, some type of exhaust joint sealent paste stuff (it was only a few bucks so i thought i would try it)
The bad this is that the muffler from pipe to pipe is only 18 inches so i bought a peice of tubing that i will just cut to size and that should do it. In the next month i will be getting a new tailpipe. Im just doing it in stages. I think i'll install it tomarrow night i'll be sure to get a sound clip when im done. |
cool lets hear that thing .i will be looking for one too here soon:popcorn:
|
i know im pumped i would do it tonight but the Xj is still at my school shop for the brakes so i will have it tomarrow.
Quick question should i put the extention before or after the muffler. i heard that you want to put the muffler as far back as possible is this true? |

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku the thrush 'welded' is the one familiar to the flowmaster, no baffles http://images.google.com/imgres?imgu...%3D2%26hl%3Den |
Yes you are correct on the way they are built. however the way the sound is different the thrush welded is a cleaner tone. I didnt want a welded cause if you get them wet when there hot the welds holding the baffles break and the muffler is trashed.

Im not saying flowmasters come apart im saying the thrush ones do. Flowmaster and magnaflow are really nice mufflers but they cost more as to the $20 thrush the quality is not the same

the $20 is the turbo, that has the baffles in it. the 'welded' is a chambered type muffler, no baffles |
Im sorry i mispoke you are right it is a chambered muffler however the walls are welded onto the outer skin then the skin is rolled over and sealed. this is the way the flowmaster 40 and thrush welded mufflers are made. However the tubro does not have this so i dont have to worry about the chamber walls coming apart

hahah there we go

Well i installed it tonight and im still kinda on the fence about it. Its a rumble over stock and you def. hear the difference. But its not quite as loud as i wanted it to be. I will get pics and a sound clip tomarrow
|
It wont be, I got my Jeep thinking it sounded stock come to find out it had a glasspack on it, The stock piping and especially the stock cat kills sound on these. My Friends was cut off right after the stock cat and was still quiet
|
I ran it out of the cat before putting the new muffler on and it was loud as hell and it sounded terrible. The new muffler is a little louder but it sounds better.
I will make a new thread with the sound clip and pics in a few mins. |

i run the cheapest 13" muffler the store has.
they do not last very long. they generally pull apart at the seams. i weld up the entire underside myself, each seam, and stitch weld the seams on top and it gives them a little more life. |
Yeah idk im not happy with this one spunds pretty stock maybe a new tail pipe will help

Quick question should i put the extention before or after the muffler. i heard that you want to put the muffler as far back as possible is this true? I'm in south central CO where there is no vehicle inspections, unless they still do emissions tests along the front range of the Rockies. I'm running a CherryBomb Turbo Muffler on AutoZone replacement exhaust pipe and tailpipe, no cat (replaced with tubing). The AZ tailpipe is 2 1/4", the same as the downpipe, and that reduces restriction a little more. But how does it sound? Well, some of the local ricer drivers with huge fart cans on their cars are jealous, but it's not loud in the XJ at all. At 70 mph in 4th or 5th, you can have a normal conversation. As for position, a rearward mounting might give a tiny bit more low RPM torque (you've still got a couple sharp turns, flattened areas for clearance, etc.), but it's not gonna help much. Budd |
yeah im gonna get a 2.5" tail pipe bent soon but until then i'll roll like this here are some pics of it installed. with all the reducers and exhaust glue crap. sorry no sound clip the jeep doesnt run right now.
