Motor replacement?

I found a 2000 cherokee with 144k and its got a suppose engine noise. (i havent looked at it yet or heard the noise) but the guy wants $1500 i was thinking of going and offering $1200 for it, and if worse case scenario replace the motor?
anyone who has replaced the motor know what it costs?
Thanks!

Well depends..If you go reman they run anywhere from $900-$1800 for a stock motor.. If you get used just get one from a 2000 XJ and it's a direct swap and all ya need is the block and head.

I would figure out what the noise was first. It may not need to be completely replaced, might just be something loose.

If it does need replaced, probably find one cheap at a JY.
