Default Motor mounts

98 4.0 4x4

I replaced my motor and transmission mounts a couple of years ago with NAPA parts. Started getting decent vibration again. Checked the mounts and the drivers side mount looks off center and the metal housing of the mount is touching the metal portion where the bolt goes through. The rubber does not looked cracked. Is there a better brand to go with or any other suggestions?

Ditto, poly transmits more vibration than rubber.

I also love my Brown Dogs. I got the whole kit with the engine brackets. They used to give forum members a 10% discount, so be sure to contact them and ask whether they're still doing that.

I feel the poly mounts are unnecessary except in pretty extreme applications because BD's rubber is much harder than OEM-style mounts. It's unlikely they'll let the engine move, but it's a little kinder to you and your passengers. No reason to torture yourself for no real gain.

I did the tranny mount along with other a couple of years ago. I'm assuming I should do the tranny again too?

*Do they make tranny mounts? Couldn't find them.

I do believe XJWonders makes the motor mounts as well.... you can get the trans and motor mounts in one shot from the same fabricator... and he ain't goin' anywhere either. Not a fly-by-night gig.

All due respect to XJWonders, I really don't like that transmission mount design. I'm not just picking on him, because he's not the only one doing that. If you look at the OEM transmission mount, it has a lot more meat in it than these little "hinge" style transmission mounts. I can't see how it's an improvement to go from a big block of rubber to a relatively tiny bushing. It seems like the OEM mount would have a lot more support while allowing the coupling between engine and bell housing a little bit of isolation from body flex. The OEM mount will certainly wear out faster, but it's a wear part anyway.

If you upgrade your motor mounts from OEM to Brown Dog or similar, you're usually getting more material of a better quality. I just don't see how it's an improvement to reduce the amount of material in the transmission mount.
