Default mj 4wd conversion

I got 89 2wd 5spd 4.0 MJ and a 90 4wd auto 4.0 lifted cherokee, just wondering what will not bolt up if theres any cutting or welding involved in swapping all the 4wd and suspension over to the MJ. Are there r any tricks or things to know before tackling the project? I know it would probly b easier to find a 4wd MJ but i cant find one in my price range that is a short bed 4.0 5spd in as good of shape as mine.

nope what you need for the swap is basically a 4wd tranny and a t-case and then just need to install.... thats the basic needs.... no welding or cutting... everything will fit just fine.. i did it in my MJ check it out i got pictures of it in my albums

now if it was a 4cylinder moving up to a 6cylinder that would be a different store because then you would need to mount the crossmember back by about 6-8" but in regards to your other part of the swap... the tranny..... i'm not familiar with compatibility at all so that might be a better question for someone else...

good luck with the build and post some pics up bro lets see this MJ and show us your progress

My little MJ looks identical to yours mines body is a little more dented up though. I like my cherokee but its got a lot of miles just waiting for one more thing to tear up and make me mad enough to start swapping parts. Thanks for the info when it warms up a little ill probably start cant wait till its done cant wait to see the MJ with 6.5 inches under it sittin on some superswampers.

I am currently doing the same conversion but I am swapping the tranny/tx case out of another comanche with a blown engine. Both are manual trannys but I did pull another engine from a cherokee with an auto. In terms of swapping from a manual 5spd 2wd to a 4wd auto the bell housings are the same so it should just bolt right up. You will need to bring the auto tranny wiring harness and control module across. So you are in for a bit of electrical work plus you'll probably need to swap the pedals.

Would love to see updates. Let me know if you plan to blog about it.

my auto trans is goin out of my xj so i think ill just find a manual trans, i was lookin underneath both and im amazed at the fact that there is basically no difference between the 2 and 4wd models i think its gonna be a lot easier than i though it would be. the only thing i think i will have to get new is shock mounts for the rear. i wonder how come i dont see more of these little trucks lifted i think they look pretty good lifted and cant wait to get started on mine.
