Default Is missing front drive shaft sign of bad front differential?

I recently bought a non running (engine problem) 99 Grand and found out that front drive shaft is missing.
Today I looked at 95 Grand and it had missing fr. drive shaft too. (not buying it)
Both are AWD.
What did sellers hide? Bad differential or transfer case?
A lot of good mechanics here.
Thanks.

i would think the diff.because if if the tc is bad just removing the front ds wouldnt hide much.Just my two cents

I would just say pop open the diff cover and see what was going on inside. I'm assuming the yoke was still on it?

.
I think you have a driveshaft thief in your neighborhood.

The driveshaft itself probably had issues, IIRC the front axle is spinning regardless and the transfer case can just be switched to 2-H.

There are couple more interesting things about that 99 Grand.
Front bolt of lower control arm was halfway out because the same guy who stole drive shaft stole the nut. He also cut exhaust pipes. (?)

But!
Engine was supported by big pry bar under oil pan.
So whoever stole drive shaft and nut from control arm forgot a pry bar.

Grands that have a bad viscous coupler in the Fulltime type transfercase typically have an owner who pulls the front shaft in an effort to eliminate the "hopping" while turning.

1) $$$$$$$
2) usually not worth it.

ETA: Apparently TC can be swapped with NP242 or NP231.

I pulled the ds on my wj until i could get it replaced because the shaft itself went bad and made a funky clanking sound. Try a junkyard shaft first before you assume the worst. Also if you service the awd tcase follow factory spec.

The common failure spot for rzeppa shafts is
