missing fan shroud

When I bought my xj a couple of months ago it did not have a shroud around the engine fan. I have not had any cooling issues yet but with summer on its way, I am worried that the missing shroud could make a difference in the amount of air that is channeled into the radiator.
Also...
Will I have to remove the whole radiator to install a new shroud?

Shouldn't need to remove rad but rather loosen the fan clutch at the pulley and with the fan inside the new shroud, lower everthing in place as a unit. Re-attach clutch to pulley, then attach the shroud.

If u don't know how old the fan clutch is, I would strongly recommend a new clutch (+/-$35).

88witha96 what state are you in?

My 93 was missing the electric fan and shroud when I bought it 4-5 yrs ago. I have never put one on and unless I am sitting in traffic (rarely here in Oklahoma) it doesn't much above 210*. Temps here in the summer commonly exceed 100*.

If you tend to sit more or do slow wheeling in the summer then a shroud would be good.

Mine was missing a fan shroud when i baught it too. I went and got one from a junkyard and i think it has helped out cooling a lil bit when doing real slow wheeling. I did not have to remove anything installing, it just dropped in but had to cut part of a corner off on the top to clear the radiator hose.

haha, yea, idk about heat issues, but have you tried to work on your engine without a shroud? kinda scary... it was real easy on my 99 and like i said, seems a lot safer... my .02

It aint that bad. It made a loud enough noise that I jerked my hand away before it cut me up too bad. Sad to say you shouldn't check your oil in the dark lol
FYI, I'm purposely leaving the shroud off all through Summer to see if I actually need it or not. If it never gets hot, I'm throwing it away

88witha96 03-28-2012 09:33 PM

Now I just have to find the right shroud. The Jeep and radiator is an 88 and the engine/fan is a 96. I'm guessing a 96 shroud is gonna be my best bet and hopefully it will mount nicely against the radiator.
Working without a shroud on does keep you on your toes! My wife won't come within 10 feet if I have the hood up!

My don't have a shroud in clutch fan and don't have any issues over heating usually runs 180 and 210 on trails

All the shrouds are the same but the closed system radiator just plain sucks. I'd try to get a 91 up radiator too just to eliminate that junky BS. I bet that HO motor on a Renix system runs damn good. Had one like that that ran like a raped ape

Does it have a t-stat in it and r u running a/c?

highwater 03-29-2012 07:46 AM

It has a gutted out t-stat housing in it and yes the on the air too. I have an electric fan too but usually don't even have to turn it on

vespa50sp 03-29-2012 01:58 PM

I ran my 2001 without the mechanical fan at all for a couple of weeks this winter while I was doing my efan conversion. The secondary electric fan hardly ever turned on. Now I have them running in Tandem. I think the clutch would make a good boat anchor.

I think you could wiggle out the shroud in without removing anything if you're careful. It's just held in by two bolts on top, and two tabs on the bottom. Unbolt the two bolts on top to slip it in and out. Practice when you take it out of a jeep in the junkyard : )

nothing wrong with a renix cooling system. just gotta burp them properly.

That's what's wrong with them. Open systems are practically idiot proof and don't require you to replace a pressure bottle once every 3 moths or so. I so wished I coulda got mine on lifetime waranty
