manual tranny.
 
i have a five speed cherokee and my mom has a five speed wranger tj and when you put either in reverse it whines well that is what it sounds like. should they be doing this or do we need to look at something?

NORMAL with most any stick shift.

alrighty thanks. just wondering if it was normal didnt want anything to break..

It whine because in reverse all the gears and gear clustrs are running backwards and those gears have a slant to the cut and are moving through thethick tranny fluid and are meshing in a antigrade movement to their normal direction.
