Again I would like to help but know little about 4 bangers. The only one knowledgeable about the little 2.5L 4 is TrueBlue. He might be on in the morning. PM him and he will get you the info when he comes back on. If the TB turns out to be the same adjustment procedure as the 4.0L then I have that to give but don't know if the readings are going to be the same.

About half way down this page is the TPS procedure but you will need a multimeter. You can get one at Harbor Freight for around $6 or from Radio Shack or Sears for under $10.

I would check the TPS first. It should be on the driver's side of the throttle body IIRC. Remove your air tube for easier access and use a multimeter like BlueXJ said. If it's only doing it intermittently, you should be able to adjust it to the correct voltage rather than have to replace it altogether. If it's bad, they tend to run in the $100 range.

With the air tube removed, you'll also be able to get a good idea of how clean your TB is. Pick up some carb cleaner and attack that throttle body, especially around the butterfly valve. If it's not opening up freely, it might also be playing a role in your sputtering and loss of power. Remove the TB and clean it at a workbench to ensure none of the buildup falls into the intake... cuz that would be bad.

Good luck.
