LSD? How to know
Gonna change front and rear diff fluid 2mara. also transfer case.
1. How do I know if my jeep has LSD?
2. What type of fluid for diffs? (valvoline 80w-90?) transfer case ATF+4?)
3. Jeep seems to "jump" into gear from park. I changed the tran fluid last week and filter.
1996 XJ Classic 4.0 w/ tow package. everything stock.

Question #1
jack up the rear end and put it in park with no ebrake and see if the wheels spin opposite...if so NO LSD
pull diff cover off and see if it has just spider gears only?
Question #2
not sure...for our jeeps...but I would look it up in your manual....or online.

Got a autozone near by? get your stuff from them and they can look it up in the computer for what kind and how much exactly what yours will take... I think they actually own Alldata which is the program most shops use for any vehicles information... Make sure your RPM's arnt up to high... Like if you rev up the motor and pull it out of park its gonna jump... even if its just alittle... Also check driveshaft U joints... the driveshaft can spin freely till the joint catches if there bad causing the jeep to jerk... Goodluck!!

1) like jacques said...jack up the rear and see how the wheels spin. If you spin one and the other goes the same way, then have a LSD.
2) Standard gear oil is 80w90. I've done lots of towing and I never worried about synthetic in the rear ends. However, if you do have a LSD, look up what jeep recommends for a friction modifier. I know Ford and GM use a GM friction modifier. Not sure if Danas or Chrysler uses it or something else.
3) Check your fluid level. If you didn't fill it up after warming up the car and driving it, it may be low causing it to jump into gear.

1. LSD:
First poster said it right jack the rear up and spin the tires if they spin the same direction you have LSD. Also you could look at the tag and post the numbers and I could tell you for sure. You can also pull the diff cover off and it will be very obvious or not.
2. Fluid:
My 91's factory manual says 75-90 in the diffs and 75-140 for extreme use and towing. So if you wheel IMHO go 75-140.

1. The jacking the rear up is a quick way.. one wheel will turn more slowly than the other.
If you do remove the cover.. the clutches are off in the sides of the carrier.
Here are both open and Limited slip carriers for Dana 35's. The Chryco 8.25 carriers look pretty similar. Open carrier on the left, limited slip on the right.
2. The specification for the diffs is 75w-90 for open, non-towing. 75w-140 full synthetic for towing. 4.0z of LSD additive if needed..
For the T-case... the same ATF used in the tranny. ATF+4 was NEVER correctly specified for the AW-4, so Dex III is what you want.
3. I'm not completely sure here... Make sure that the fluid is filled to the correct level.
