lost my marks on my driveshaft. bad vibes now

So I got bad vibes right now because I lost my marks on the driveshaft while installing it. Is there anything on the driveshaft that illustrates the spline configuration? Also, Is it out of phase because of the u joints being installed 180 degrees from what they were supposed to be or from the splines not lining up the same way they did from the factory?

Thanks in advance!

Forgot to mention it's got no sye and it's the rear shaft. Anyway I could screw that up?

Not really did you roll the car or spin the transmission while you were doing it

disguay 07-05-2012 06:16 PM

I rolled the jeep a bit and I had to install a new transmission so I moved the tranfer case to transmission splines so I could get them to go together. Basically I am worried that the driveshaft only can install to the xcase splines in one configuration and I got that configuration wrong because I lost my marks. Now, I'm trying to get that configuration right.

I've never had a problem even when I swapped my transsmission. Did you get a new tranny or was it new to you. If it was a used did you replace the tranny mount?

disguay 07-05-2012 08:59 PM

Delta, I got it from the scrapyard and I used my old tranny mount. Do you think that's what might be causing the vibes? It seems like it's coming from the back

If you're sure the U-joint(s) are OK, just flip the rear shaft 180 degrees from where it is right now respective to the differential yoke and reinstall.

You probably just have it out of phase from where it was before.

I'll try that firestorm and if that doesn't fix it, I'll go with a new tranny mount to see if that helps it. The guy I bought it from said it was running perfect before I bought it and I know that he wasn't screwing with me

Yes do what fire said then I would test your mount chances are you need one and if you get it online it not that expensive check rockauto

For now, I'd take him at his word.

Heck, when I bought my '87 Renix 5 1/2 years ago, I wondered why it was so hard to get in and out of 4WD.

Later I found out there weren't any bolts in the transfer case to bracket mount, allowing the whole driveline to shift around about 6 inches total out of line.

But I never got a vibration.

well guys I think I found it... My shackle bolts for the front u-joint were so old and decrepit that my first test drive shook some loose and broke the others. I know I tightened them down too! I think I need some thread lock. Anyone know off the top of your head what type of bolt I need to replace the missing ones?

go to the jy and pull them the front and rears have a different thread so don't cross thread them. I would go to the jy because around here they don't care about bolts so I always grab some while I'm there

turned out it was the whole front shaft that was bad. The double cardan was shot

3JeepGuy 08-01-2012 05:52 AM

I am in the process of rebuilding my front drive shaft. Make sure you check the centering yoke in the double cardan end. After installing the new u joints, I had a very bad vibration both in 2 & 4 WD. Turned out to be the centering yoke. Use Spicer #211355X centering yoke and rubber boot Spicer #2-86-418. Bought mine form Action Machine Inc. Both parts w/shipping around $72. Great service and fast shipping. Here is their link: www.actionmachineinc.com.
