Lost keys

Hey guys I've lost my keys to my 1990 cherokee last night during a legendary bender. Today is turning out to be horrible because I'm learning that a dealership will not be able to get my key code, as the truck is too old... doesnt make sense to me, but this is what I keep hearing. Unfortunately they aren't open on a Sunday or else I would check. I called a locksmith and he quoted me $500!!! for a new key to be made. That seems like someone is playing me for an idiot. So my question is, WTF do I do? Haha.

Not having 1 or two spares is already stupid. Easiest thing would be to pull the lock from the passengers door or the rear lift gate and take it to the lock smith for him to make you a new key. Should be 75-100 bucks tops and ask for a couple spares as well. Don't pull the drivers lock as it can be too worn to get a good key off of it.

What about the ignition cylinder.... same thing? Or should I just buy a replacement cylinder with a new key?

They key you get made from either the passenger door or rear lift gate should fit it all...as 1 key fits all of the key holes. Reason using one of those locks instead of ignition switch is due to it being worn and might be a issue getting a good key cut. Yes you could be ignition switch cylinder with key then pretty good chance it wont fit the other locks.

Well I'm already having to use 2 different keys. Ignition key and door key aren't interchangable

Any reason why you can't replace the ignition key cylinder that comes with a new key? For my 95 ZJ it fairly simple, remove the plastic pieces around the steering, exposing the ign key cylinder, remove and then replace with new ignition cylinder that comes with a new ignition key.

RockAuto lists a new ignition cylinder that come with a new ign. key from around ~$8.00 to $20.00 https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...cylinder,10041

Do you still have the other key for the doors, hatch and glove compartment? If not you can remove one of the key cylinders and have another key made and your back where you started with two keys. Cost should be at the most should be around $50.00. Some locksmiths only charge ~$25.00 possibly less. Be sure to have some spares made.

for similar reasons, I get a key/s cut and tape them somewhere under the vehicle

you especially dont want to misplace/lose your keys out on the trail, where no locksmith is nearby
