Looking to pull the trigger on a 2001 xj

5 Attachment(s)
I currently have a 89 jeep Cherokee. It's been a great jeep I just want something a little newer to carry my family around in. I found a white 2001 jeep Cherokee 4x4 for only $3500 148,000 miles Power doors, locks, ect.

My main concern is the head cracking. I have done some research some people said they fixed the head problem in 2000 some say they didn't. What are the chances my head could crack? Also I see rust on the wheels. This is no biggie as I have a rough country 3" lift and Jk wheels I was going to put on my 89 but I'm now saving for my new jeep. If there is this much much rust on the wheels does that mean everything underneath is rusted to?

I have not had a chance to go look at the jeep as it's 6 hours away, I was going to pay a mechanic to take a look at it before I make the drive up to see it my self.

I have the vin is possible to tell what axle it has?

Any thoughts or comments would be nice.

The 2000 and 2001 have the bad heads.

Some seem to do just fine. As long as its never been ran hot.

It will have a d30 front and a Chrysler 8.25 rear with 29 spline axles.

If you like it. Buy it. If the head cracks... replace it.

It's not a big deal.

You can get a remanufactured head for a fair price and swap it in a short weekend.

No guarantee the head will crack, some don't, some do, it's a chance you take. The 0331 head was used on late '99-'01 XJs, as far as I know it was never "fixed". In '02 the Grand Cherokee switched to the 0331 "TUPY" head which was a different casting that resolved the cracking between cylinder 3 and 4 (I think that's where they cracked?). As far as the rust on the wheels, probably not a big deal but it's easy enough to check other rust-prone areas like the rockers for signs of rot. I can't believe how cheap XJs are outside California... this would be at least $6K here.

I just emailed jeep to get a build sheet this is what I got back. I was surprised I got a response in 10 minutes.

if it were me i would buy it knowing somewhere down the road you will replace the head

some never crack....some do

if he is at 3500...see if 3k will buy it. 3250 maybe?

the money saved will buy you (almost) a new head....there ya go all set

just make sure when you order a new one...you get the "tupy" head...

Pull the trigger and buy it for that price clean xjs are getting harder to find

Kaktus 01-16-2013 01:35 PM

I probably am going to pull the trigger on this once it checks out with a mechanic. I'm just going to keep in mind I may need to replace the head some day. "or maybe with a little luck the heads already been changed :)" wishful thinking I guess. This jeep is actually at a car lot and comes with a 3000 mile warranty. Plus its $1500 dollars less than the competition.

Thanks for the input everyone.

Looks like the front bumper is tweaked
Look at the gap between the front bumper and the header panel. Maybe he just bumped something...but worth looking into.

Id say 3k is a decent price if everything checks out.

BIGJON396 01-16-2013 01:58 PM

whats the email address to jeep to get the build sheet?

I noticed the bumper does look tweaked like its pulled out. Hopefully that's all that's wrong with it, and no front other front end damage. If so gives me a excuse to upgrade to a new front bumper

As far getting the build sheets I used this link:http://www.jeep.com/wccsapp/universa...ull&category=U

^^ He beat me to it

JerrytheJeep 01-16-2013 02:22 PM

I agree with the bumper tweaked part, I'm on my phone but it does look like its in a decent condition. Definatly heavily used for an 01 though, ask if those are mostly highway miles or what, any long road trips etc. Ask for service records, chances are it has something like an oil change or whatever non mechanic people do Haha. Figure that the KBB value on an 01 xj in pristine condition is around 4500-5000, it deteriorates the more miles and stuff it has, like tweaks in the bumper, rusty wheels, faulty wiring you get the idea. Only feel you need to pay as much as you want for the vehicle, often times people overprice their stuff and leave out a major issue. Like a head crack, check the coolant level, exhaust, underbelly, 3500 is a lot of money this thing better be spotless. My bro got a 2000 (01 body style) for 1200 because it ran like ****. Had a broke lifter and a cracked head, bam 2000$ for a pristine xj. There are values out there, shop around and you'll find one that matches your price.

ctjkelley 01-16-2013 03:58 PM

i was looking at your build sheet and noticed that it specifies a dana 30 181mm front axle. I requested a build sheet for my 98 sport and it specifies that mine is a 230mm but does not state what kind it is. Anyone familer with this?
