ok, i was looking into getting a whip antenna to hook up to the radio to get better FM reception. i dont have a CB, but i live in the valley between two big mountains in vermont and get about two stations. i was looking at a 15 foot whip. im thinking of mounting it to the rear corner of the jeep, and leaning it forward and making a mount so i can attach it to the hood. kind of like the military HMMWV's had. what do you guys think? anyone else do this and have pics? anyone hook a whip to their radio and did it work? thanks guys

I'm no radio expert, but my understanding of FM is the wave length will not allow it to wrap around a mountain the same as a longer wavelength AM signal will. We always had to have line of sight for any of our FM transmitters. I am not sure a whip will allow you to get any more signals than you currently get. But I think that ones you get will be clearer.

VHF radio propagation is mostly line of sight. The FM band is in the VHF portion of the radio spectrum. The best antenna in the world won't be of any use if the signal is blocked by mountains. Also, a 15' whip is not the correct length for VHF (too long). However, it may improve your AM reception (lower frequency, different propagation characteristics) plus it will look cool.

ok, well thanks for the input fellas. all i get here is 1 classic rock station, and 1 country station. im getting tired of classic rock, and i will light my pant on fire while im in them before i listen to the other station.

My advice is, set up your whip like mine. Lol. Its an 8.5 Ft. Whip and its used for CB, but it looks best and you get great reception without having to modify much. Easier bracket installation under the hood too.

My suggestion, save the cash, Buy Sirius radio... you can get it anywhere... line of sight or not.

Go XM/Serious. I had XM before the merger when it first came out and loved every second of it.

I had it hard wired to my Sony, drove from New York to Georgia and back, didn't loose reception once.

**** hit the fan in my wallet and I had to give it up, I miss it every time I hear the same song twice every two hours.

I had a LONG whip that I mounted to my PS rear 1/4 panel... Well they're threaded wrong to work very well on that side. Even tied down in the front they'll catch on tree limbs and get pulled loose or bent etc.

Anyway, I ended up w/ a 3 or 4' fiberglass antenna.

i had Sirius but i couldnt get very good reception. i would with the ipod idea, but i have no tapedeck for the converter, but i guess i could get an fm transmitter. hey lilred, who made your roof rack? i like the gutter mount set up.

i want one, but i dont want to spend a crap load of cash.
