Default Locker Question?

yes ive seached many many pages and learned lots about lockers. just to help my understanding of them.
so if you have front and rear lockers, are you in 4wheel drive all the time except around turns? what happens when you engage in 4x4? or just driving down the road in 2 high? leaning towards the aussie or powertrax, but this is not about which is better... there are to many treads arguing that for there to be another
thanks in advance

Front and rear lockers:

In 2wd, the front locker is not working. The rear locker is locked when torque is applied to the axle, or when you press the gas. If you coast around a corner, it will unlock and rachet, which allows the outside tire to turn faster than the inside (this is good). In other words, the rear locker is locked in 2wd or 4wd.

In 4wd, both lockers are locked since power is applied to both axles.

Hope that clears it up.

By the way, powertrax and aussie are both better. How's that?

If you'll notice that when you romp on the gas, say in sand or gravel, only one wheel will spin. A locker splits the power between both of the wheels on the same axle, so they both would spin. In the same sence, if you DIDN'T have a locker, and one wheel was in the air, that wheel would spin, a locker will prevent that from happeneing. They work the regardless front or rear. HTH!!

One other thing I learned the hard way when I installed my front Aussie Locker. In an XJ with the vacuum axle disco. After the locker is installed, even in 2WD, the driver's side front wheel, differential and front driveshaft will all now be spinning all the time. If you have a non disco front axle, the whole works will be spinning all the time. No big deal as your locker will unlock when going around corners but I'm sure you'll get some subtle jerks and you will need to get used to it. I absolutely love my Aussies but, you will be using a little more gas than you were before locking the front. The only way around this is to buy the $900 free wheel hub kit offered for the XJ D30 from Warn. Too expensive in my opinion and I love having lock out hubs. Miss that from my Toyletta days.

What year is your XJ?? The reason I ask is that Aussie does not offer a locker for the older 27 spline 8.25 axle. They do offer one for the newer 29 spline 8.25 axle.

...and no you don't need to beef up your axles for 32s or smaller. I have 32 and my axles are completely stock other than Aussies and 4.56 gears front and rear.

there's a lockright for the 27 spline so he's covered either way

Good point, MUDD.....and I can vouch for Lock Rites being just as tuff. I had 5.29 gears and Lock Rites in a Toyota with a Marlin Crawler pushing 35s. Lots of available torque (after being multipied about 20 times) and big heavy tires on steel rims. Those lockers took some SERIOUS abuse and never missed a lick.
